DeepL: My Favorite Translator Restricts Free Usage

Hello there, DeepL! What’s up with this? Well, to be honest, I’ve never completely understood how you can offer such an amazing service for practically no money. Now, it seems that the Cologne-based startup realizes they need to make some changes.

For some time now, DeepL has limited free translations to only 1,500 characters without requiring an account. Previously, the limit had already been reduced from 5,000 to 3,000 characters. If you need more, you have to split your original text into multiple sections.

If you rely on DeepL so much that it’s worth spending money, the monthly subscription “Starter” costs 8.99 euros, allowing you to translate text without any limitations.

According to Caschy’s report, there is now even a weekly limit. However, he does not reveal how high that limit is. It appears that the restriction is implemented through cookies, so there might be a way to bypass it.
